Project Need & Benefits

Project Need

Much of the equipment that comprises Rhode Island Energy’s L190 transmission circuit dates back to the 1960s, and is in need of an upgrade. The wooden H-frame and 3-pole structures that line the transmission corridor have sustained natural degradation and, in some places, damage caused by wildlife. Additionally, the electrical components used for the L190 line are nearing the end of their useful life and will be upgraded with more modern components for greater reliability.

With growing electrical loads across the region, future capacity was also concern for the existing infrastructure. At this time, the line is sufficient for meeting existing demand, but forecasted load growth was also a factor in the need to update this line (based on ISO-NE’s 2029 Needs Assessment).

Project Benefits

The installation of weathering steel poles and a more modern electrical conductor (wire) will greatly improve the reliability of the line, significantly reduce maintenance, and extend the life of this line for decades. Along with the upgrade to the poles and wires, RIE is installing a new integrated ‘optical ground wire’ which will serve to both protect the line as a shield wire while also providing high speed communications between substations. This project will also provide aesthetic consistency along the line, as the new equipment will match similar equipment that was previously installed on the opposite side of the right-of-way (ROW).
